Legal Assistant
Nature of Job:
Provides attorneys with support in serving clients and their legal needs. Practice areas of law include Business Planning/ Formation/Transactions, Trust/Estate Planning, Estate Administration/Probate, Trust Administration, Guardianship, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Real Estate Transactions, and Planned Giving. Position includes drafting correspondence, pleadings, discovery, notices, summons, and affidavits. A high level of independent judgment, initiative and problem-solving skills are required. Integrity, follow through and confidentiality are important personal characteristics.
Examples of Work
- Prepare start-up documents for new business Clients as well as handle existing clients’ needs
- Assist in filing business organizational documents with Secretary of State
- Prepare Company Kits (stock certificates, minutes, registers)
- Assist attorney in trial preparation by drafting discovery documents, Inventories of Assets and Liabilities, helping with pre-trial exhibits and meeting with Clients to review discovery
- Assist attorneys with contracts and leases for real estate transactions
- Coordinate with various pro-bono organizations that the firm serves
- Act as liaison with clients in various practice areas
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Education, Experience, and Abilities
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Previous legal experience a plus. Requires knowledge of legal practices and procedures; ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently; knowledge of the principles and practices of office management; ability to analyze and interpret data, make independent decisions, plan, assign, review and evaluate the work of other personnel; demonstrate ability to use advanced techniques in word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
Special Requirements
May need to take typing test. Experience with tax law is a plus.
